CMS Made Simple is close to beta

We, the dev team, have made a great deal of progress since our last announcement, and are looking forward to going into Beta testing, more of which below. Before discussing that, however, here is a roundup of some of the recent progress made.

A completely rewritten Module Manager integrates both the existing Module Manager and the Extensions->Modules page into one section. When looking through modules to install, you will be able to see release dates and approximate download counts. Additionally, you will be able to download any version of any module. The module manager will also use caching for performance improvements.Â

MicroTiny has also been rewritten, and now uses TinyMCE 4.0, which provides for a lot more functionality. Included are two brand new TinyMCE Plugins.  The first, a new linker plugin that uses Ajax and auto-complete, better handles larger sites. The second is a new file picker plugin that has multiple display modes.Â

There have also been continued improvements through the system. These include improvements in internal module management and module loading, and upgraded JQuery and Jquery UI versions. Two other core modules where you’ll see improvements are Search and News. The ‘content’ tag plugin has been given additional functionality; new parameters that are available include ‘placeholder’, ‘priority’, ‘required’ and ‘css name’.

Due to lack of resources, we've had to temporarily shelve the new installer / upgrader, which means that the upgrade process will not be as clean as we had hoped. However, this is still in the pipeline for future releases and we will be welcoming feedback on this during the beta. We will be getting rid of the older upgrade routines as they will not be used in the new system.Â

So, we are preparing for the Beta to be released. Our expectation is that it will be in February, dependent on the time it takes us to go through the final quality assurance tests before Beta start.   We actively encourage module developers to participate, in order to get a feel for what the major 2.0 changes will have potentially done to their modules.

As an aid to module developers, we are preparing a comprehensive document about what was ‘broken’ and what in the API has changed. An initial list to aid developers in considering what they may need to change in their modules is:Â

WYSIWYG / Syntax area modules.
Modules that create content types
Modules that manipulate templates

The Beta will be open and run for a few months. We will be highly restricting any new features that are added during beta.

There is still always ongoing work to do; for example we’ll be upgrading the Blueimp file uploader for better upgrading, upgrading Smarty, writing the new upgrade routine and testing /documenting module compatibility issues.Â

CMSMS 2.0 is shaping up very nicely and we think you will be very pleased with the results.

We look forward to working with you during the Beta. The 2.0 series will continue in the great tradition of its predecessors, forming a solid, reliable and extensive base on which to make your website projects and modules thrive.Â
