Poll: Would you consider attending a CMSMS focused conference?
Mar 27, 2009 by Ted Kulp
Found here: http://forum.cmsmadesimple.org/index.php/topic,32453.0.html
I'm just trying to gauge the potential interest of a CMSMS focused conference in lieu of (or addition to) the traditional geek moot we normally do. There would most likely be a charge. Nothing crazy, but it would be necessary to cover the costs of the facility and any other resources we'd need to get to put on a conference. It would be in Western Europe... possibly the UK, and most likely in the late summer, early autumn.
If people are hungry for this kind of thing, we could consider it. But given it's a LOT of work to put on, there would have to be considerable interest before proceeding.
Thanks for your help!

I would be all for a conference if it were to be held in the northeast region of US. Particularly DC, MD VA area, wink, wink.

You and me both. I'm from the Philly area and it would definitely be easier to plan. However, we have a pretty Europe-focused userbase and dev group. Having the moot here last year resulted in a lot more people not being able to come.

I would attend however I don't think the UK would be that great of a choice, somewhere near Belgium, Paris - France or even West-Germany or Luxembourg would be a better choice. The UK is far to much of a hastle to travel to compared to the other places (Schengen countries) and it's to far out for a lot of people in the rest of Europe, somewhere more central would be much better for people to travel to by car.
But then again I don't really know what percentage of the userbase is from the UK, maybe it would be a better option if a lot of people are Britons.

A European conference sounds great. Something on the European mainland sounds even better!

Conference - sounds great and may be a take off event to make cmsms one of the top five gpl cms. Consider to set up a global conference with national dependancies in the most important countries with live ip-broadcasting conference via mogulus or zaplive. This would open up an oportunity for many people to attend without high travel expenses....

I wouldn't mind attending... wish I could afford to go to Europe... but I would love to go, and hope to see it get off the ground.

If it is in the UK then I think it would be a good idea. About time we had a CMSMS event here :-)

Sounds like a great idea. I'm in the UK and would support and attend a UK based conference. If else where I wouldn't be able to justify the expence.

Hi,
I would - especially if 2.0 was being discussed. Somewhere in Europe would be great; Ireland even better.

I don't suppose there's anyone else that wants to host it in Australia? :)
I'll probably have to give it a miss this time, sad to say....

I suggest a place where there is a Ryan Air airport nearby, so we all could get there cheap. Then the place would not really matter.
Otherwise, I'd prefer Central Europe - Belgium sounds like a good compromise. Of course I would welcome the conference to be held in the west of Germany ;-))
Cheers,
Alex

My opinion: Brussels or Paris is cheaper than London. I would be happy to help to organise a conference in Brussels.
Another idea, but in another timing too would be to held the conference at the Fosdem, but it will be in February then.

Depends what currency you are paying in with the British pound being so low maybe a good time to take advantage. So yes I'd vote for a UK/London conference.

@secoif: Nope. I'll go to SXSW next year, though. The baby didn't allow me this year.

Hey,
We're having the second one this year in The Netherlands :-) In case you would join us (May 30), I have appr. 6 extra beds for folks who wish to stay over and are not allergic to cats (I have one of those hairy little terrorists)... The workshop location is a 40 minutes from my village (Zaandam), the airport is only 20 minutes away from where I live (Zaandam is right next door to Amsterdam). Feel free to get in touch! My nick on the forum is Compufairy.

I'm detecting quite a lot of support for the UK option here - I'll be exploring options for the UK myself but for those of you who have preferences in this poll - go find yourselves a good local venue - and read the next post...

Hmmm, I'm up in Eastern Canada (Quebec), so anything on US east coast works for me, Boston to NYC to DC...
Europe, I doubt my boss would pay for me to go to Europe for a CMSMS conference!
OR, come up to Canada, either in Montreal, Toronto, or Ottawa!
With the exchange rate being lower, I'm sure it would be more affordable to setup the conference

I'm detecting more support for mainland-Europe.

Australia really is perfect (not too hot) this time of year, and cheap.
But if not, Belgium would be my next pick. (Not that I could afford a European trip in the near future.)
How about a video-conference between three hubs - US, Europe & Asia Pacific?

If you're going to do it in the USA, do it in Denver as it's a major city and centrally located in the country. Also, I happen to live there.

Why not conduct a streaming live conference? I know there is a bit of a Euro/US time challenge, but the logistics and dollars(or marks or euros or pounds or rupies.....) make sense to do it that way.
There HAS to be some SAS company that does it.

I must agree with Simon that Belgium is the best location :D For one, i wont have to delocate too, only a matter of minutes on foot :P Secondly, the facilities can be found for free (universite libre de bruxelles), the ULB supports talks especially on open source and technology related and can offer free auditoriums on request (like at FOSDEM 2009) or if not the ESI (my college, Ecole Superieur d'Informatique) also supports talks and for free (such as the European Perl Talk 2008).. And lastly and most importantly, nothing beats belgian beer :D And if you like beer, no cafe beats the Delirium Cafe ;)

Great idea. I'm based in south UK so UK or West Europe would be great. But time/cost may not permit, so a web-based conference will please everyone! Also if the presentation videos are kept and made available online then anyone can watch them at their leisure...
