June 2011 CMS Made Simple Newsletter

06/02/2011

Welcome to the June 2011 CMS Made Simple Newsletter

The summer months will see a real increase in development activity here at CMSMS as we push forward to the next major release with our newly expanded team. We're also hoping to send out these newsletters with a bit more frequency to keep the community up-to-date with progress on all fronts. Thanks for tuning in!

CMS News Vulnerability

A few days ago a vulnerability was spotted in CMSMS. The News module shipped with all versions of CMS Made Simple was open to SQL injection attacks that would return the hashed versions of all administrator passwords, allowing the hacker to gain administrative access to the website if those hashes could be reverse engineered.

The full text of the announcement can be read here

New development team members

The CMSMS dev team would like to welcome our two newest members, Tapio Löytty and Goran Ilic (known to those of you who haunt the IRC channel as Stikki and Uniq3). Tapio is about to graduate as a Software Engineer at the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences in Finland and Goran maintains the amazing CMSMS tutorial/blog site at http://www.i-do-this.com/.

Work begins on next major version

Work has begun on the next major version of CMS Made Simple, version 1.10. The development team have spent the last few months looking at various options to improve memory usage and speed both site and module loading. Some of the improvements expected in 1.10 are:

  1. Memory optimization through the introduction of lazy loading for modules
  2. Clean up of internal objects, classes and arrays to provide access to better PHP5 coding methods
  3. Providing support for methods to allow better multi-language facilities
  4. Various admin area changes such as new default settings for content types
  5. Optimization of CSS file loading

As there's been no feature freeze so far there may be other improvements added prior to the version release in late summer or early fall.
